Flora and Fauna

For those interested in the natural world there are plenty of opportunities to see a variety of bird and plant species close to the villa. There are many paths and trails leading from the Quinta where you could encounter a number of birds, butterflies and plants that are unique to southern Europe.

Casa do Mestre is ideally suited for the keen bird watcher, with a wealth of local species, including: Purple Heron, Little Bittern, Hoopoe, Alpine Swift, Bee-eater, Red-necked Nightjar, Azure-winged Magpie, Little Owl, Spotted Fly Catcher, Cattle Egret, Little Egret, Greater Flamingo, Black-winged Stilt, Red-cheeked Waxbill and many more. Just a short walk away is Lagoa dos Salgados a local mecca for waterbirds and waders.

If you prefer to just relax at the villa it is very likely that you will still see a number of different birds and butterflies from the comfort of the sunloungers on the patio and elsewhere on the quinta.

The number of European White Storks nesting in Portugal has increased fivefold in the past two decades and they are now off the Endangered Species list. You can see breeding White Storks in several locations throughout the Algarve region, watch out for them along the roadside on telegraph poles.
